US president Donald Trump has congratulated Kosova on the 18th anniversary of its independence, reaffirming what he described as Washington’s unwavering support for the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, according to the office of President Vjosa Osmani.
In a letter sent to Prishtina, Trump praised Kosova for its participation in the establishment of the Peace Board initiative and for backing US efforts to address global crises, including those in Ukraine and Gaza. He said the relationship between the two countries continued to grow and signalled readiness to deepen cooperation through trade and investment.
“As our relationship continues to expand, we welcome the strengthening of our partnership through increased commercial cooperation and investment. The United States stands ready to work alongside Kosova to advance peace and stability for our mutual benefit,” the letter said.
The United States has provided more than $2bn in assistance to Kosova since 1998, playing a central role in its post-war reconstruction and state-building. Kosovar leaders have repeatedly described the US as the country’s most important strategic partner, underscoring the importance of continued American backing.
Kosova recently joined Trump’s Peace Board initiative, a framework aimed at supporting efforts to end conflicts worldwide. The move comes amid renewed diplomatic engagement between the two governments.
Relations have, at times, been strained. During previous decisions taken by the government of prime minister Albin Kurti concerning the Serb minority, US officials voiced concern that certain measures were unilateral and insufficiently coordinated with international partners. As a result, Washington last year suspended the launch of a planned Strategic Dialogue with Kosova.
In recent weeks, however, the US embassy in Prishtina has indicated that Washington is prepared to relaunch the process and work with Kurti, who began his third term as prime minister last week.
The United States was among the first countries to recognise Kosova’s independence, declared on 17 February 2008. To date, 121 states recognise its statehood. Non-recognition by four Nato members and five European Union countries remains a diplomatic obstacle as Kosova seeks membership in both organisations.
