Lake Shkodra Declared a UNESCO Treasure

Share

Lake Shkodra has officially been designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, receiving one of the most significant international recognitions for nature conservation and biodiversity protection.

The decision was approved following Albania’s application submitted in December 2025, as part of efforts to strengthen the protection of one of Southeast Europe’s most important ecosystems.

Lake Shkodra, shared between Albania and Montenegro, is considered one of the richest biodiversity areas in the region. It is home to hundreds of bird, fish, and other plant and animal species, including several that are rare or endangered.

The new Biosphere Reserve status aims to enhance the long-term protection of the lake’s ecosystem while promoting sustainable economic development, nature-based tourism, and cross-border cooperation between Albania and Montenegro.

The UNESCO recognition is expected to bring increased international attention and support for environmental protection projects and sustainable development initiatives for local communities living around the lake.
