The prestigious New York Times has named Albanian film “Pikë Uji” (Drop of Water) by director Robert Budina as one of the five international films not to be missed this month, marking a major recognition for Albanian cinema on the global stage.
Film critic Devika Girish praised Budina’s work, noting how he “wraps his characters in a gloomy atmosphere of blue and gray hues and distorted perspectives, highlighting the deep rot beneath the lives of the wealthy and powerful.”
The story follows Aida, played by actress Gresa Pallaska, a powerful woman whose world collapses when her teenage son is accused of rape. Alongside her, actors Arben Bajraktaraj and Iancu Paulo bring complex characters that expose corruption, misogyny, and the collapse of illusions.
Budina explained that the film’s title is inspired by Pythagoras’ cup, symbolizing moral boundaries and the breaking point when they are exceeded. “An Albanian story must also speak to a European audience” the director said, adding that the film has already achieved success both with Albanian viewers and at major international festivals.
