For the first time in New York City history, the Albanian language will officially be taught in a public school as part of a full dual-language program. Starting in September 2025, PS 108 Philip J. Abinanti in Bronx will launch a bilingual Albanian-English curriculum for kindergarten students.
This groundbreaking initiative is a major milestone for the Albanian-American community, offering children the chance to grow up fluent in both their heritage language and English—right from the classroom.
Registration for the 2025–2026 school year is now open, starting with kindergarten. The program will expand each year to include higher grades.
“I’m thrilled to share this incredible news. It’s a victory for the entire Albanian community in NYC” said Drita Gjongecaj, one of the key initiators of the project. Classes will be held five days a week in both languages, taught by certified teachers from the NYC Department of Education.
Former NYC Council Member Mark Gjonaj, a strong supporter of the program, urged all local Albanian parents not to miss this rare opportunity:
“Preserving our language is the best way to protect our identity and cultural legacy.”
