Remembering the Albanian Heroes Who Lost Their Lives on 9/11

Share

September 11, 2001, remains one of the darkest days in American history. Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives in the terrorist attacks that struck the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Washington D.C., and a hijacked plane that crashed in Pennsylvania. Among the victims were three Albanians, whose stories continue to live on within the Albanian-American community.

Simon Dedvukaj, only 26 years old, worked as a maintenance supervisor at the World Trade Center. On that tragic morning, he was inside the North Tower. Simon was known as a hardworking young man who dedicated himself to helping his family and community. After his death, the Simon M. Dedvukaj Foundation was created in New York to support younger generations and encourage them to serve their families and communities—keeping his legacy alive.

Rrok (Rocco) Camaj, originally from Malësia e Madhe in northern Albania, worked as a window cleaner on the Twin Towers. On September 11, he was on the 105th floor when the plane struck. Trapped inside, Rrok managed to call his son Vincent to say goodbye. His final words, telling his family to stay strong and united, remain a lasting memory of his courage and love for his loved ones.

Mon Gjonbalaj, 65 years old from Kosovo, had spent many years working at the World Trade Center. On that day, he was on the 86th floor. In his last phone call, Mon told his children to remain strong and take care of each other, fully aware that he would not make it out alive. His story, like those of Simon and Rrok, reflects the sacrifice and dignity of ordinary people caught in extraordinary tragedy.
