The United States has granted approval for Kosovo’s request to acquire Javelin anti-tank missiles. This major development in Kosovo’s defense capabilities is a pivotal step in the country’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its military forces.
The American State Department is poised to present Kosovo’s request to the U.S. Congress, initiating the formal procedure. This move aligns with Kosovo’s broader objective of enhancing the operational capacity of the Kosovo Security Force (FSK).
The Kosovo Ministry of Defense confirmed the acquisition, noting that it is part of a strategic plan to upgrade the FSK’s military capabilities. The purchase is in line with a military agreement between the Republic of Kosovo and the United States, functioning under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program. This program is crucial to U.S. foreign policy, facilitating security assistance and military equipment sales to allied countries.
The Javelin missile system, produced by Lockheed Martin, is renowned for its precision and anti-armor effectiveness. The demand for this system has increased substantially, leading to a significant rise in production. This addition to Kosovo’s arsenal will significantly enhance its military capabilities.
Beyond the American weaponry, the FSK is also equipped with Turkish-manufactured arms, including armored military vehicles and drones. By 2028, when the FSK is expected to fully transform into an army, it is anticipated to achieve all operational capacities necessary for “maintaining the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Kosovo, as well as the protection of its citizens, property, and national interests.”
Currently, the FSK comprises approximately 2,500 members. Following its transitional period, this number is expected to increase to over 7,500, including both active and reserve personnel.
In Kosovo’s 2024 budget, approved at the end of last year, the Ministry of Defense was allocated a budget of 153,049,911 euros. This funding underlines the country’s commitment to reinforcing its defense sector and ensuring long-term stability and security.
