A 30-year-old woman from North Macedonia has been charged in the United States with voting illegally in the 2024 presidential election.
Sara Luma, described by Albanian media as Albanian, was charged on September 30 in Wisconsin’s Eastern District with unlawfully voting as a non-citizen.
Prosecutors say Luma registered at the polls in Sheboygan, Wisconsin on November 5, 2024, and signed a voter registration form certifying she was a US citizen. According to the complaint, she later admitted to a federal agent that she registered and voted.
Immigration court records show Luma was detained on August 13, 2026, while trying to re-enter the United States. She was allowed to self-deport to North Macedonia in September.
An arrest warrant has been issued, and she will be arrested if she tries to return to the US.
“Protecting the integrity of our elections is critically important,” said First Assistant US Attorney Brad Schimel.
The case is part of a wider Trump administration crackdown on non-citizen voting. The Justice Department has charged at least 60 people with the offense since January 2025.
A day after Luma was charged, a federal judge in Miami ruled in a separate case that the 1996 law used to prosecute non-citizen voters is unconstitutional. The ruling applies only to that case.
A criminal complaint is only an allegation, and Luma is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
