Share

Dr. Eneda Toska, a brilliant Albanian scientist from Vlora, is making headlines in the U.S. for her exceptional work in cancer research. After nearly two decades of dedication, she now leads her own laboratory at the prestigious Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she serves as an assistant professor of oncology.

Recently, Dr. Toska was honored with a prestigious award for “Outstanding Contributions as a Young Investigator” in the fight against cancer. Speaking in an earlier interview, she shared her inspiring journey—from a teenager in Vlora to becoming one of the leading voices in breast cancer genetics and biology.

“I didn’t want to leave Vlora” she recalls. “I loved my school, my friends, the beach… but my parents sacrificed everything when they won the U.S. lottery in 2002 to give us a better future.”

Driven by that sacrifice, she pursued her education relentlessly—earning her bachelor’s in biology and chemistry (cum laude), a master’s (magna cum laude), and a PhD in cancer biology and genetics in New York. Her postdoctoral research took place at the world-renowned Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, under the mentorship of Dr. José Baselga.

In 2021, she opened her independent lab at Johns Hopkins, where she now mentors scientists and researches new breast cancer treatments. Her focus: the estrogen-positive type, Her2-positive tumors, and the aggressive triple-negative breast cancer. She urges all women over 40 to get annual mammograms and ultrasounds, emphasizing that early detection saves lives.

Dr. Toska has received multiple prestigious honors, including the “Next Generation Star” title and major research grants from the U.S. National Institutes of Health. Her groundbreaking work is offering new hope to patients worldwide.
