New allegations have placed Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić at the center of one of the most disturbing crimes of the Bosnian war — a scheme known as the “Sarajevo Sniper Safari,” where wealthy foreigners allegedly paid large sums of money to shoot at civilians during the siege of Sarajevo.

The claims resurfaced this week after The Telegraph and The Guardian published detailed reports connecting Vučić to military positions above Sarajevo in the early 1990s, where mass killings of civilians took place. More than 10,000 people were killed by sniper fire and shelling between 1992 and 1996 in the longest siege in modern European history.

According to Croatian investigative journalist Domagoj Margetić, who has filed a legal complaint with Milan prosecutors, Vučić was allegedly present at sniper positions controlled by the Serbian Radical Party’s paramilitary units. Video footage posted in recent days shows a young Vučić traveling in a military vehicle near frontline positions and holding what Margetić claims is a rifle — at the exact time and location where foreign “sniper tourists” were shooting civilians.

Italian, Russian, American, German, French and other foreign nationals are alleged to have traveled to Sarajevo, paying Serbian forces to be escorted to sniper nests overlooking the city. Investigators say they are suspected of voluntary murder aggravated by cruelty, after paying to “hunt” civilians — including children — for personal satisfaction.

Another complaint submitted in Italy includes evidence gathered by Milan-based writer Ezio Gavazzeni and a report from former Sarajevo mayor Benjamina Karić, urging prosecutors to identify foreign participants and those who facilitated the trips.

Vučić has denied ever firing on Sarajevo, insisting he never participated in military activities and claiming the object seen in videos was a camera tripod or an umbrella. His spokesperson called the allegations “malicious disinformation.”

But inside Serbia, the accusations took a dramatic turn when politician Nikola Sandulović said that Vučić’s presence at the sniper posts had been confirmed even by his former party leader, Vojislav Šešelj. Sandulović said that many witnesses — Serbian, Bosnian Serb, and foreign — had already testified that Vučić was present at the scene during the killings.

According to Sandulović, the sniper “safaris” were well-organized operations supported by elements of the Serbian state at the time. Witnesses reportedly described a chilling “price list” for the killings — with the highest reward allegedly given for shooting a mother with a child.

Sandulović said there were over 200 organized trips from Belgrade to Sarajevo between 1993 and 1995, using helicopters, buses and private vehicles that transported foreign participants to the front lines.

He urged the international community to take responsibility and ensure that the allegations are fully investigated, saying the evidence places Vučić “without any doubt at the time and place of the crimes.”
