For the First Time: Kosova Refugees Honored Inside Canada’s Parliament

Share

For the first time, Kosova Albanian refugees were officially honored inside Canada’s Parliament. On March 25, 2026, Parliament Hill hosted the event “25@25: Honouring Refugees, Resilience and Stories of Survival,” marking 25 years since refugees from Kosova began rebuilding their lives in Canada.

Organized by Arta Rexhepi in partnership with MP Kyle Seeback, the ceremony recognized 25 individuals whose journeys reflect courage, leadership, and extraordinary contribution to Canadian society.

Among the honourees were Arnisa Morina, who arrived in Canada at age three after losing her father in the war, and Shpresa Loshaj, a senior Canadian government official committed to protecting nature in Kosova. The late Dr. Agron Alija was honored posthumously.

The evening also highlighted Albanian culture through performances by singer Tringa Rexhepi, Vatra Dance Group from Windsor, and other artists, with traditional Albanian costumes adding color and heritage to the historic halls.

Twenty-five years after arriving as refugees, Kosova Albanians in Canada now stand as a model of integration, preserving their language and culture while excelling in every sector. This historic recognition at Parliament Hill celebrated not only personal success but a resilient community’s extraordinary journey.
