Albania is aging rapidly, the average age of women reaches 39.1 years, of men 37.3

Because they live longer, the average age of women in Albania is higher than men.

In 2022, the average age of Albanian women reached 39.1 years (median age means that 50% of women are under this age and 50% above this age), increasing by almost 11 months a year, INSTAT reported.

While the average age of men reached 37.3 years or 2.3 years lower than women. The median age of men in Albania as everywhere in the world is lower than that of women because they have a lower life expectancy of at least 5 years.

The middle age of the population in our country is growing rapidly from year to year signaling the aging of the population. Over the course of a year the median age for both sexes almost increased by one year, while in the last 10 years for women it increased by 4.6 years and for men by 5.5 years.

The average age for the total population reached 38.2 years on one January 2022, compared to 37.6 years in 2021. Throughout the last decade, the country’s population aged 5 years.

In the following years the median age of the population is expected to increase rapidly due to the decline in the number of births. The decline in births and younger population will tilt the median age ratios in favor of the older population.

The population of Albania on January 1, 2022 is 2,793,592 inhabitants, experiencing a decrease of 1.3%, compared to January 1, 2021. This is the fifth consecutive year with a contraction in the number of inhabitants.

During 2021 the natural increase of the population (birth-death) was -3,296 inhabitants, marking for the first time a negative natural increase.

On January 1, 2022, the youth dependency ratio (the ratio of the population 0-14 years old to the population 15-64 years old) decreased compared to January 1, 2021: from 24.2% to 24.0%, while the ratio of elderly (ratio of population 65+ to population 15-64 years old) increased: from 22.3% to 23.1% over the same period.

According to projections published by INSTAT, the population of Albania will continue the aging process and its median age is expected to reach 42.1 years, in 2031.

Among European countries, Monaco has the highest median age, where according to an article in the World Economic Forum it is 53.1 years.

In the world, the countries with the highest median age after Monaco are: Japan with 47.3 years, Germany with 47.1 years, Italy with 45.5 years and Slovenia with 44.5 years.

Europe is the continent with the highest percentage of the elderly, with 18% of the population over 65 versus 16% of the population under 15 years of age. In the world, this ratio is 9% of the population over 65 years old and 26% of it are under 15 years old. After Europe, the North American continent ranks second in terms of median age of 35 years.

Africa is the continent with the youngest age. In Africa, almost 41% of the population is under 15 years old and 3% over 65 years old. The median age on the African continent is 18 years old and the youngest country on the globe is Nigeria with a median age of 15.4 years.
