Albania has officially received a mandate in the UN Human Rights Council, where it was selected during the vote for two of the three vacant seats.
The news was announced by the Albanian chief diplomat, Igli Hasani, through a post on social media X, previously known as Twitter.
“Today, Albania was chosen for the Human Rights Council for the period 2024-26. Another great achievement for Albanian foreign policy and diplomacy; another demonstration of trust from the UN and its member states regarding Albania’s role in international matters,” he wrote.
Additionally, the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs stated that this time, the country is fully committed to the protection and promotion of human rights everywhere and for everyone.
Albania was in the category representing Eastern Europe and had equal chances with Bulgaria and Russia for the two positions on the Council.
Nevertheless, the member states deemed it appropriate to choose Albania and Bulgaria for this high UN body, leaving Russia out, especially after its exclusion last year, following the onset of aggression in Ukraine.
Overall, 15 new members were selected for the Council from around the world for the period 2024-2026.
