Albania has experienced the largest population collapse in Europe, with over 500,000 people gone between 2011 and 2024, according to the latest Eurostat data. The country’s population fell by a staggering 18.2% in just 13 years — the steepest decline across the continent.
The data paints a grim picture for several Balkan and Eastern European countries, but none as severe as Albania. In comparison, Bulgaria saw a 12.3% decline, North Macedonia 11.4%, and Bosnia and Herzegovina 11.2%. Other countries with major losses include Croatia (-9.7%), Latvia (-9.4%), Serbia (-9%), and even Greece (-6.3%).
Experts say Albania’s sharp drop is driven by massive emigration, low birth rates, and youth drain. Hundreds of thousands of Albanians have left in search of better opportunities, especially in the EU and North America.
