In a proud and historic moment for the Albanian community, Nebi Qena, a respected journalist from Kosovo, has been named Deputy Director for Video in the United States at the global news powerhouse, Associated Press (AP) — becoming the first Albanian ever to hold this prestigious position.

The news was shared in a letter from AP’s U.S. News Director, Josh Hoffner, who praised Qena’s extraordinary work across some of the world’s most intense and dangerous news zones. “He has excelled in every role he’s held — many under extremely difficult conditions” Hoffner wrote, pointing to Qena’s experience covering major global events, from the conflicts in Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank to assignments in Ukraine, as well as major stories in the U.S., including the Los Angeles wildfires and terrorist attacks in New Orleans.

Qena began his career as a young reporter during the Kosovo War, working for the respected daily Koha Ditore. After the war, he joined Radio Television of Kosovo, before moving to the Associated Press — where he climbed the ranks through talent, hard work, and leadership. Over the years, he has served in key roles in Europe, Jerusalem, and now in Washington D.C.
