Strong earthquake in Taiwan

Share

A strong earthquake shook much of Taiwan on Sunday, toppling a three-story building and temporarily trapping four people, who were later rescued.

As a result of the earthquake, a passenger train partially derailed, while landslides on a mountainside trapped around 400 tourists.

Most of the damage appears to have occurred north of the earthquake’s epicenter in the city of Chishang.

The 6.8-magnitude quake was the largest of dozens that have rocked the island’s southeast coast since Saturday night, when a 6.4 quake hit the same area. So far, authorities have not reported any serious injuries.

According to officials, over 7,000 families have been left without electricity.
