The European Minimum Wage Directive is about to be adopted. A little over a year and a half after the European Commission proposal, the provision has already been adopted by the European Parliament and the Council.

“The Presidency of the Council and the negotiators of the European Parliament have reached an interim political agreement on the draft directive on minimum wages in the EU.” This was announced by the European Council in a statement.

“The new law, once finally adopted, will promote the adequacy of legal minimum wages and thus contribute to achieving good working and living conditions for European employees,” the statement said.

According to her, “Member States are required to establish a procedural framework for setting and updating the minimum wage, according to a set of clear criteria.”

“The Council and the European Parliament have agreed that legal minimum wage updates will be made at least every two years (or at most every four years for those countries that use an automatic indexing mechanism). “The social partners will have to be involved in the procedures for setting and updating the legal minimum wage.”

“The directive aims to increase workers’ coverage through collective agreements, ie where the coverage rate of collective agreements is below a threshold of 80%, Member States should define an action plan to promote collective agreements,” the EU statement said. -së.
