“National Geographic”: Discover the Coastal Treasures of the Albanian Riviera

Share

Albania’s beaches will become a “hit” this summer. The Balkan country shines with a treasure of kilometers-long beaches hidden between archaeological remains, writes Ana María González Franco in an article published in the Spanish edition of “National Geographic”.

Gradually, this beautiful Balkan country is emerging as the undiscovered paradise of the Mediterranean.

However, what is clear is that Albania has everything it needs to become the most coveted European destination, with spectacular beaches for every tourist.

The Albanian Riviera stretches along a stunning coastline, with archaeological sites, fascinating history, cultural features, and rich cuisine – all of which can be found in the best beaches of Albania.

Ksamil Beach: A synthesis of the Albanian Riviera

If Albania were to be summed up in a single beach, the winner would be Ksamil.

The beach with the same name stands out for its snow-white sand along a broken coastline scattered with four islands (Twin Island, Emerald Island, Small Island, and Rocky Island).

There are several beautiful white-sand beaches in Ksamil, although most are private and run by restaurants.

The fact that it is located south of Saranda, facing the island of Corfu, makes it a very attractive destination for both Albanians and foreign tourists – who cross the southern border of the country or take the ferry from Italy or Greece.

As if there weren’t enough reasons for it to be one of the best beaches in Albania, Ksamil is the ideal place to explore other Albanian attractions such as the Blue Eye and Butrint National Park, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Borsh Beach: Several kilometers long with turquoise waters

About an hour’s drive from Saranda along the Ionian coast lies the longest beach on the entire Albanian Riviera, Borsh.

This beach is over 6 kilometers long and, beyond its size, stands out for its crystal-clear waters and giant mountains with lush vegetation surrounding the blue sea.

This enclave is known for its tranquility and wild character, making it the preferred beach for tourists looking to escape the mass and “civilized” tourism of neighboring beaches.

However, there are several bars and restaurants nearby, as well as a large parking area.

Gjipe Beach: Albania’s wild treasure

One of the most precious treasures on the Albanian Riviera is Gjipe Beach, a panoramic spot that enchants with its wild natural surroundings, dreamy sunsets and sunrises, and its turquoise waters.

Despite being one of the most coveted beaches, to get there, visitors must walk for about half an hour, passing between bunkers, climbing a steep slope, and avoiding large rocks.

Located at the end of the canyon of the same name, the small bay is surrounded by giant cliffs, making it one of the most picturesque beaches in Albania.

Dhërmi Beach: Urban, natural, and local

As one of Albania’s largest urban beaches, Dhërmi welcomes locals and foreign tourists looking for all the amenities they need to spend a day at the beach.

The town center is elevated and close to the sea, the beach and promenade are the hub of summer activity, with bars and restaurants, which also offer sunbeds and umbrellas for rent, since there are both public and private areas.

To the north, the beach becomes rockier, and on the outskirts, you can visit coves and caves, including Drimadhes, a beautiful bay with white sand and rocks, accessible by following a trail through olive trees.

Jale Beach: Day and night

In a strategic location between Himara and Dhërmi, beyond the village of Vuno, lies Jale Beach, one of the paradises of the Ionian coast, hidden among hills filled with olive groves and houses.

Tall cliffs surround the small coves of this Mediterranean corner, where the water takes on indescribable colors.

Jale’s beauty is first perceived from the high hill.

Beyond being an ideal place to relax or practice diving and water sports, Jale is a favorite destination for tourists looking for nightlife.

There are also many nearby restaurants and bars where you can try local dishes.

Lukova Beach: Relaxation in the Albanian Riviera

Lukova is ideal for enjoying the tranquility of the Albanian Riviera, as it is located in an incredible natural setting far from the most coveted coastal spots.

That doesn’t mean its beach, Shpella Beach, doesn’t offer all the amenities, including sunbed and umbrella rentals and a range of restaurants that combine Mediterranean cuisine with breathtaking scenery.

Anyone seeking a natural experience need only lift their eyes and lose themselves in the crystal-clear waters and their contrast with the green hills that rise around them.

Kakome Beach: The Albanian crescent

Kakome Beach is a natural wonder in the shape of a crescent surrounded by lush vegetation.

The landscape is dominated by its stunning waters.

Besides this idyllic view, Kakome Beach – practically deserted – offers peace and the chance to enjoy the majestic panorama.

Tourists can also visit the Monastery of Saint Mary of Kakome, a 16th-century Byzantine complex.

Porto Palermo: Geographically unique

Porto Palermo is undoubtedly one of the most unique places in Albania.

Located between the villages of Himara and Qeparo, it is surrounded by an island connected to the coastline.

Nearby is Ali Pasha’s Castle, from which you can enjoy the most spectacular views of the surrounding area.

Although the coastline of Porto Palermo is very rocky, there are small pebble beaches where you can enter the water without having to climb over rocks.

Despite being one of the most popular spots on the Albanian Riviera, Porto Palermo has not yet been affected by mass tourism, preserving the wild character that makes this entire coastline a well-kept secret… for now.

Qeparo Beach: The ideal seaside walk

Qeparo Beach offers some of the most beautiful sunsets in the country.

It is an ideal place to relax, dive, or swim, as well as to take a boat trip to the surrounding caves and cliffs, or to walk up to Mount Çika – from where you can enjoy spectacular views.

The beach is surrounded by a promenade, where you’ll find restaurants and all the amenities for a beach day.
