Adri Mehmeti, a 17-year-old of Albanian origin, has made history with the United States national team.
The midfielder started in the US’s 4-2 win over Chile, becoming the youngest player Mauricio Pochettino has named in a starting lineup since taking charge of the team.
It was Mehmeti’s second appearance for the US, after debuting earlier in another friendly. He was part of a young lineup with an average age of just 23.1.
Mehmeti has also become a regular starter for New York in MLS, with one goal and four assists in the league this season.
His first professional goal came on April 12 against Inter Miami, in a match against Lionel Messi. His father drove about 2,500 kilometers from Texas to Miami, a 22-hour trip, to watch him play.
His international future may not be settled yet. Albanian media report that his story with the national team could still take a turn.
