A disturbing act of vandalism has shaken the Albanian-American community in Michigan after the sacred grounds of the Albanian-American Monastery in Taylor were targeted by an unknown individual.
Orlando Kamaj, a local Albanian-American resident, was walking with his family when he discovered shattered stained-glass pieces scattered across the sidewalk outside the monastery. “I just saw one of the windows broken” Kamaj said, adding that it was unclear whether the incident was religiously motivated or a hate crime.
The vandal didn’t stop at just the stained glass — the monastery’s mausoleum was also damaged. Surveillance footage shows the suspect walking near the property around 4:30 p.m., but as of now, no arrest has been made.
Taylor Police are actively investigating and haven’t ruled out the possibility of a hate crime. “Depending on the motives of the offender, it could be” said Detective Lt. Frank Canning. “We’re very interested in identifying this subject.”
The Albanian-American community in Downriver is deeply troubled and calling for justice. Anyone with information is urged to contact Taylor Police at (734) 374-1420.
