A new international film inspired by one of the darkest chapters in Kosovo’s history — the Reçak massacre of 1999 — is on its way, with Hollywood legend Robert De Niro expected to take part in the project. The announcement was made by Fitim Krasniqi, a producer from Kosovo whose own family tragedy lies at the heart of the story. In an interview with journalist Blendi Fevziu, Krasniqi revealed that the movie will not only revisit the horrors of war but will also tell the personal story of his father — a victim who, as he recounted, was “shot and then burned alive.”

“This film is also my father’s story,” Krasniqi said. “He was injured and burned alive. Many international actors will be part of it — I believe even Robert De Niro. All contracts have been signed, and he accepted the role with great pleasure,” he told Klan Kosova. According to him, filming is set to begin next year, once the cast’s demanding schedules align.

The massacre of Reçak, in which 45 Albanian civilians were killed by Serbian security forces on 15 January 1999, became a defining moment of the Kosovo war. The images of the victims, documented by OSCE observers, shocked the world and helped shift international opinion toward intervention. More than two decades later, the upcoming film seeks to restore memory through cinema — merging global star power with local testimony.
