President Biden’s speech in the eyes of international opinion

Share

President Joe Biden warned Thursday that extremist supporters of former President Donald Trump pose a serious threat to American democracy. Meanwhile, Mr. Trump is being investigated for his handling of classified national defense documents. Experts say that the world is following this development with interest.

President Joe Biden took a much tougher tone in his speech this week, saying he believes former President Donald Trump and his supporters represent an extremism that threatens America. President Biden also said he is tired of the lie that the 2020 election was “stolen” or “rigged.”

“I will not allow the will of the American people to be subverted by wild conspiracy theories and baseless evidence of fraud claims. I cannot sit idly by and watch the elections in this country be stolen by people who simply refuse to admit they lost “, President Biden said.

Expert Cécile Shea told VOA that she believes President Biden is challenging Mr. Trump now because he is sensing a change.

“I think President Biden is in some ways reflecting what he feels is a changing attitude in part of our society. People don’t like the trends they’ve seen in recent years. These are not necessarily progressives, people who would support a left-wing candidate, but rather people who believe in justice, who believe that President Trump should not have walked out of the White House with classified documents.” says expert Cécile Shea of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.

Mr Trump has denied wrongdoing by taking documents from the White House and storing them at his home in Florida. He has attacked the FBI and the Justice Department, saying “the search of his home was an insidious attack on democracy.” The FBI had managed to obtain a warrant to search the former president’s residence.

On Thursday, Mr. Trump said that if he ran for president again and won, he would “consider the possibility” of offering pardons to all those convicted of violent crimes related to the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

The international public is also paying attention to former President Trump’s refusal to turn over classified documents. Expert Shea told VOA that she has heard mixed reactions to this.

“For the billions of people in the world who do not live in a country where the Department of Justice would feel empowered to investigate and prosecute a former president, they look at what is happening in the United States with wonder and even envy.” she says.

One expert, who works in Belgium, says many Europeans are anxiously following developments in the United States as November’s congressional, state and local elections approach.

“There’s a lot of interest in trying to figure out where the United States is going, if Trumpism is going to outlive Mr. Trump, as they say here. I think European leaders spent most of their time during the President’s administration Trump trying to decipher it and figure out how to work with it more effectively.”

German Marshall Fund expert Ian Lesser told VOA that above all, the allies want to see predictable actions from the United States, which, according to him, did not happen often during the previous US administration.
