Kosovo has offered to become the first country to accept asylum seekers rejected by the United Kingdom, in what Prime Minister Albin Kurti called a gesture of friendship and partnership with London.
Speaking during his visit to the UK, Kurti said that Kosovo “wants to help Britain” and is ready to discuss details of the plan with British officials. “We consider this our friendly and political duty” he said, adding that Kosovo has limited capacity but strong will to contribute.
The Guardian reports that British and Kosovar officials are already in early talks about how such a system could work. The proposal would make Kosovo the first country to formally agree to take in asylum seekers refused by the UK, as London continues to seek “third-country” arrangements to manage migration.
Kurti also emphasized that Kosovo expects stronger cooperation from the UK in return — especially in areas of security, defense, and investment.
Meanwhile, other leaders in the Western Balkans have criticized the idea, saying Britain is “looking for places to dump immigrants.” Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama previously called similar UK proposals “unthinkable before Brexit.”
