Kosovo has officially begun receiving migrants deported from the United States as part of an agreement reached with the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti confirmed on Thursday that at least one or two migrants have already arrived in the country.
In an interview, Kurti stated that Kosovo is now hosting individuals “whom the United States does not want on its territory” marking the start of the implementation of the one-year agreement.
The deal, finalized in June, allows Kosovo to accept up to 50 migrants designated for deportation from the U.S. According to the government, the arrangement was made as a gesture of “everlasting gratitude” for American support to Kosovo since its independence in 2008.
Under the agreement, the migrants will stay in Kosovo temporarily while plans are made for their safe return to their countries of origin. They are required to follow Kosovo’s laws and are guaranteed rights under local legislation.
