Pink lights, flowers, and tears filled a Bronx funeral home this week as mourners said their final goodbye to Ebba Morina, the 13-year-old Albanian girl from Manhattan who died while subway surfing in New York City.

Ebba lost her life on October 4, 2025, along with her 12-year-old friend Zemfira Mukhtarov from Brooklyn, after both climbed onto a moving J train heading toward Queens. Police say the girls were riding atop the train as it crossed the Williamsburg Bridge when they were struck by a low-hanging beam. They were later found lifeless on top of the train at the Marcy Avenue station.

Days later, more than a hundred mourners gathered at Farenga Brothers Funeral Home in the Bronx, where Ebba’s pink-lit coffin stood surrounded by flowers and a slideshow showing her life from infancy to her teenage years. Family members and friends described her as “a wonderful girl, full of life.”

The incident has shocked both the Albanian-American community and the wider public. Ebba Morina was remembered as a bright young girl from the Upper East Side — a promising life cut tragically short.

Authorities say subway-surfing deaths have surged in New York, with at least five fatalities already in 2025. Police believe the trend is being fueled by social-media challenges, despite awareness campaigns and even drones deployed to deter it.

Officials urged parents to talk with their children about the dangers of viral stunts. “Riding outside a moving train is not a game — it’s a death trap,” one transit spokesperson said.

Rest in peace, Ebba Morina. Gone too soon, but never forgotten.
