Albania to Finance Mira Murati’s OpenAI Rival With $10 Million

Share

Albania is stepping onto the global tech stage by co-financing the ambitious new AI startup founded by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati. The Albanian government has committed $10 million to support “Thinking Machines Lab,” a company Murati is leading with the goal of creating AI systems that are more understandable, customizable, and powerful than current models like ChatGPT.

Prime Minister Edi Rama confirmed the news on April 15, stating:
“It’s time for the state to enter and invest in companies. I spoke with Mira Murati and asked if it’s possible for Albania to join. She said absolutely.”

The Ministry of Economy, Culture, and Innovation has submitted a funding request to the Ministry of Finance, arguing that this strategic investment will not only generate economic returns but also elevate Albania’s reputation in the global tech community.

The proposed budget amendment, which includes an increase of 1 billion lekë in both revenue and spending, does not affect the country’s deficit level. However, since national elections are scheduled for May 11, the Ministry of Finance has asked the Central Election Commission (CEC) for an opinion on whether this budget change complies with the electoral code.

Despite not yet having a product or revenue, Thinking Machines Lab is aiming to raise $2 billion in one of the largest early-stage funding rounds ever. According to Business Insider, this would place the company’s valuation at a staggering $10 billion.
