Albania now has 28,000 more women than men, as emigration continues to reshape the country’s population.

By the end of 2025, Albania had 1,182,000 women and 1,154,000 men, according to data reported by Euronews Albania. The country’s total resident population stood at 2,336,000.

The gap comes despite birth statistics in recent years showing more boys born than girls.

Higher emigration among men and longer life expectancy among women are the main reasons the ratio has reversed.

Both groups shrank over the past year. Compared with the end of 2024, the male population fell by 1.3% and the female population by 1.0%.

Natural population growth was still slightly positive in 2025. There were 1,063 more births than deaths among women, but only 84 among men.

Women also lead in education, with 65% holding a higher education degree. In politics, however, they hold only a third of the seats in Albania’s Parliament.
