An Albanian man convicted of murdering his wife in Michigan has been taken into U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody after completing his prison sentence and now faces deportation.

Gjin Kolbucaj, an Albanian national, was arrested by ICE Detroit upon his release from the Richard A. Handlon Correctional Facility in Ionia, Michigan. According to ICE, he will remain in federal custody while removal proceedings move forward.

The case dates back to March 31, 2006, when Kolbucaj fatally shot his wife, Ljulaja Kolbucaj, inside their condominium in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Ljulaja, who was originally from the former Yugoslavia, was 39 years old.

The killing left the couple’s two children, then 9 and 11 years old, without their mother. Court records show Kolbucaj later lost his parental rights.

Following the shooting, Kolbucaj turned the gun on himself, shooting himself twice in the chest. He survived his injuries and was taken into custody. While being held in the Macomb County Jail, he also reportedly attempted suicide by diving headfirst from the top bunk of his cell.

In 2008, shortly after jury selection began in his murder trial, Kolbucaj pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison for second-degree murder, along with an additional two-year sentence on a felony firearm conviction.

ICE announced this week that its Detroit field office arrested Kolbucaj immediately after his release from state prison. The agency said he will remain detained pending immigration proceedings that could result in his removal from the United States.
