The Albanian ambassador and the Russian ambassador clash in the UNSC over Kosovo

The issue of Kosovo has been the subject of the clash between the ambassador of Russia and the ambassador of Albania in the Security Council of the United Nations Organization in New York, on Tuesday.

At the UN Security Council meeting, the Russian ambassador, Vasily Nebenzya, drew a parallel between Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine and the recent war in Kosovo, while accusing the West of “double standards”.

He said that the West recognized the independence of Kosovo even without any referendum, while now it treats the case of Ukraine differently.

“By denying the people of Donbas in the liberated territories of Ukraine the right to self-determination, the Western delegations are demonstrating their scandalous double standards. The most vocal critics of the referendum in Donbas, Zaporozhye were once at the forefront of support for Kosovo’s independence. Then they declared that the territory had the right to leave the Serbian state if there was a real threat that the rights of the Kosovar Albanians would be seriously violated by the so-called corrective succession, and that this was not just a statement, but the official legal position presented by the states Western powers at the UN International Court of Justice in 2008. At that time, Kosovo Albanians, however, were not threatened by anything at all, because Yugoslavia was no longer on the map. NATO bombed Serbia, there were foreign troops there as peacekeepers. I want to underline differently from the situation in Crimea, LPR and DPR… and the people of Zaporozhye. In Kosovo, there was absolutely no referendum, there are no free votes of the people there. It was only a declaration of independence, adopted by provisional self-governing authorities that exceeded their powers. At that time, this was enough for the West to recognize Kosovo’s independence and confirmed that international law did not prevent it from declaring its independence,” he said.

Albania’s ambassador to the UN, Ferit Hoxha, immediately reacted to the comparison of Russian aggression in Ukraine with the case of Kosovo.

“Nothing can be more artificial and inaccurate than the comparison of international efforts to end the conflict, to protect civilians and to establish a peace process, to find a lasting solution, as was the case of Kosovo , with the pure and unprovoked aggression and the referendum that is now being held in Ukraine. No one is delusional and cannot be deceived by this, no one tries to compare the incomparable, no short cut from historical and political context will help Russia divert attention from its war in Ukraine or raise its bridge to international law, which has made it an international parallel”, emphasized Ambassador Hoxha.

The Russian ambassador to the UNSC also spoke about the agreement between Serbia and Russia, signed a few days ago in New York, which provoked a strong reaction in the West, because it was signed at a time when democratic countries have condemned Russian aggression. against Ukraine and imposed sanctions on the Russian Federation.

Nebenzya said that it is not right for Serbia to be pressured to impose sanctions on Russia, stressing that the two countries have a long historical relationship between them.
