During his first official visit to Tirana, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken declared that the relations between the United States and Albania are stronger than ever before. Prime Minister Edi Rama of Albania hailed Blinken’s visit as a “historic day” for the country.
Speaking at a press conference alongside Prime Minister Rama, Blinken thanked Albania for its role in NATO, its support for Ukraine, and its condemnation of Russian aggression. He highlighted Albania’s significant support for Ukraine, including sending ammunition, weapons, and mine-resistant vehicles.
Since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Albania, a NATO member since 2009, has stood firmly with the alliance and the European Union in supporting Ukraine. It has also supported a UN General Assembly resolution condemning Russia’s occupation of Ukraine and initiated efforts to document and investigate war crimes in Ukraine through the UN.
“During its 15 years in NATO, Albania has made significant contributions to our alliance,” Blinken stated. “Albanian troops have helped maintain peace in Kosovo and deter Russian aggression in the eastern flank of NATO.”
Blinken affirmed that the U.S. will continue to support Albania in achieving justice reforms crucial for its path toward EU membership.
“Judicial reforms have not been easy, but they are yielding real results,” Blinken remarked. “Today, I met with high-ranking judges and prosecutors who are assisting in reform efforts. Corrupt officials are being held accountable, and members of organized crime are going to prison and losing their assets. This is a powerful process.”
