Massive Student Protest in Skopje Over Albanian Language Exam Ban

Share

Hundreds of Albanian students have taken to the streets in Skopje, demanding that the jurisprudence exam be allowed in the Albanian language.

The march, which headed toward the Ministry of Justice, highlighted growing concerns over language rights and equal treatment in education and state institutions in North Macedonia.

Chants such as “The Albanian language cannot be stopped” and “The Albanian language is non-negotiable” echoed throughout the protest.

An Albanian citizen from North Macedonia who traveled from the United States joined the demonstration, calling the students’ demands legitimate and urging a resolution from institutions. Students from Kosova also participated, while organizers reported wider support from Albanian public figures and politicians.

During the protest, several students were detained by authorities, with reports confirming that five individuals were arrested. The situation unfolded amid heightened tensions as students continue to demand that the jurisprudence exam be made available in Albanian and that language rights be fully respected.
