Albanians Fighting Cancer USA: Concert for Humanitarian Causes

Share

In an effort to generate funds to assist patients, caregivers, and survivors, the organization Albanians Fighting Cancer (AFC) USA organized a classical music concert. Held at the New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall, the event featured the internationally recognized artists Inva Mula and Genc Tukici. The success of the event not only amplified the spirits of attendees but also helped to position AFC as the primary cancer advocacy group within the community.

Dr. Eglantina Kica, a physician and major sponsor of AFC, took the stage first. Her opening remarks emphasized the significance of the support received at the fundraiser. According to her, this kind of support enhances the mission of the AFC and appreciates the dedication and efforts of its members. In her gratitude-filled speech, Roberta Panariti Nashi, the founder and director of AFC, thanked the Board, donors, supporters, and volunteers. She referred to the concert as an “homage to hope,” reflecting Pope Frances’ words about love giving meaning and happiness to life.

Archimandrite Theofan (Koja) from the Saint George’s Albanian Orthodox Cathedral in Boston praised the carefully curated musical program. The performance smoothly transitioned from classical pieces to Albanian ballads, both old and new. The powerful theme of discovering hope amid despair touched the audience and performers alike. Soprano Inva Mula took the opportunity to express her admiration for AFC on stage. She conveyed her emotional connection with the organization, which stands out among others they encountered during their world tours.

Mara, a member of the audience seated near the stage, acknowledged the thoughtful arrangement of Italian and French arias, followed by a beautifully executed Albanian repertoire. This repertoire effectively expressed the concert’s theme and connected with the community. In another section of the audience, Valbona Lavdari, a realtor, attended the concert to show her support for AFC. She used social media platforms to encourage her followers to join the event, a kind of backing greatly appreciated by AFC, as expressed by Dr. Ivi Kasimati in his closing remarks.

Sharing her childhood memories from Albania, another attendee, Ariana Cani, expressed her desire to witness more events like this one. The combination of Inva Mula’s beautiful voice and Genc Tukiçi’s extraordinary musical talent offered a unique dual sonic experience, dedicated to a worthy cause. Ariana feels fortunate to know Roberta, the leader of AFC, whom she respects for her dedication and community focus.

The event drew a diverse audience, including first-generation Americans accompanied by their Albanian American parents and grandparents. Despite not being very familiar with classical music or old Shkodra songs, the younger generation showed their appreciation through applause and occasionally took photos. They seemed to be more engaged when invited by Inva to sing along, which reminded them of their family gatherings.

The event reached its emotional peak during Tukici’s performance of a well-loved Albanian song from 1901. The song, originally titled “Longing for Motherland” but later known as “Mornings of May,” was beautifully played by Tukici. His rendition of “I love Albania the most” beautifully encapsulated the song’s dual meaning. This spontaneous interaction turned the audience into an impromptu choir, creating an unforgettable moment for everyone present.

Following the concert, AFC received a flood of messages from survivors, family members, and other supporters. One message from an individual in Columbus, Ohio, undergoing radiation and chemotherapy, expressed gratitude for raising awareness about cancer. The patient pledged to help others like them on this challenging journey.

Established in 2019, Albanians Fighting Cancer – USA is a registered non-profit charity based in Boston, MA 501(c)(3). Its mission is to raise awareness about cancer prevention and treatment, and to provide support for families and patients battling the disease.
