“New York New York” by Frank Sinatra, the song that popularized New York as “The City That Never Sleeps”

Share

Francis Albert Sinatra was an American singer, actor and producer and one of the most popular and influential artists of the 20th century. He is one of the top selling music artists of all time.

Frank Sinatra was undoubtedly an entertainer, a singer whose unique voice captivated millions.

One of his most popular songs is “New York New York”. Although many people associate this song with Frank Sinatra, it was Liza Minnelli who debuted this song in the 1977 film of the same name, which was directed by Martin Scorsese and starred Minnelli and Robert De Niro as musicians and lovers. It was written for the film by John Kander and Fred Ebb.

Frank Sinatra began performing this in 1978 in concerts at New York’s Radio City Music Hall. His version was released on his 1980 triple album Trilogy: Past, Present and Future, which was critically acclaimed and brought the singer back into the public eye. “New York, New York” quickly became one of Sinatra’s most famous songs.

While many songs have been written about New York City, no song has captured the city’s pride and elegance like this one. The song’s lyric, “If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere” sums up how many New Yorkers feel about their city: competition is intense, but success there is richly rewarded. This song also popularized New York as “The City That Never Sleeps”, which is true in the literal sense that many businesses are open 24 hours, but also in the figurative sense that you are always expected to be at your best.

The song is written from the perspective of an artist who leaves a small town and tries to make life in a big city. Instead of obsessing over the difficulties he will face, he embraces the challenges awaiting a new life in a vibrant city.

Frank Sinatra was one of the most successful artists of the time. He won 18 Grammys and is thought to have sold around 800 million records worldwide. On May 14, 1998, he died of a heart attack. In Las Vegas, the lights went out for ten minutes in his honor.
