An online petition launched recently is seeking the inclusion of the white Plis in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The initiative calls for international recognition and protection of this traditional Albanian headwear, also known in different regions as qeleshe, kësulë, or qylaf.
According to the organizers, inscription on the UNESCO list would help safeguard traditional production techniques, support artisans who continue to craft it by hand, and promote Albanian cultural heritage at an international level.
The Plis is widely regarded as one of the most recognizable elements of traditional Albanian identity and has been worn for centuries in daily life, ceremonies, and historical events. It is typically made of white wool and features shapes that vary by region.
Within days of its launch, the petition gathered approximately 4,000 signatures. Organizers aim to use this public support to raise awareness and encourage institutional steps toward submitting an official nomination to UNESCO.
