First Albanian USAF Pilot, Edmond Smajli, Makes a Memorable Visit to Kosovo

Share

Edmond Smajli’s journey began in Klina, a small town in Kosovo. Today, he stands proud as the first Albanian pilot of the United States Air Force (USAF). Along the way, his dedication and perseverance have made him a beacon of inspiration for many, both in the USA and his homeland.

Edmond’s early years were spent in Rockwall, Texas. It was here that he graduated from Rockwall RHS High School in 2015. However, his passion for aviation had been ignited much earlier. At the tender age of 15, Edmond’s interest in flying was kindled by a restaurant customer who owned an airplane. Little did he know, this would be the beginning of his long-standing affair with the skies.

His thirst for knowledge and aspiration to fly led him to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida. By May 2020, Edmond had not only secured a Bachelor’s degree in Aeronautics but also amassed numerous flying hours and earned his instrument rating.

But Edmond’s accomplishments didn’t stop there. He is also a graduate of the Air Force ROTC Detachment 157 Academy. By March 2018, he had earned his pilot’s right. Come May 2021, Edmond was participating in Pilot Training at the University in Randolph, Texas, located at the Joint Base San Antonio.

It’s worth noting that Edmond is not just a talented individual but also has roots deeply embedded in community service. He is the son of Ismet Smajli, a well-known figure in the Albanian community in Texas, and the General Secretary of the Global Union of Albanian Businesses in the Diaspora.

Recently, First Lieutenant Edmond Smajli of the USAF Military Aviation paid a heartfelt visit to Kosovo. Even during his stay, he proudly donned his USAF pilot’s uniform, leaving an indelible mark on many, including Kosovo’s President, Vjosa Osmani. During their meeting, President Osmani lauded the young officer for his achievements in their allied nation, the USA. Overwhelmed with gratitude, Edmond felt deeply honored, remarking that these moments would forever remain etched in his memory.

His journey, marked by determination and zeal, truly encapsulates his sentiment: “When we wear this uniform, we feel very proud, like golden ambassadors.” Indeed, Edmond Smajli’s story is one of unwavering commitment and dreams realized against all odds.
