The United Nations General Assembly has designated May 29 as the UN International Day of Peacekeepers.
This day is intended to honor peacekeepers who have lost their lives for the cause of peace, as well as to honor all the men and women who continue to serve in UN operations with high professionalism, dedication and courage.
Since the establishment of the peacekeeping mission in 1948, about 3,200 soldiers, police and civilian staff have lost their lives in the service of peace, as a result of accidents, violence, or various diseases in several countries. This day is used to strengthen ties between peacekeepers and the community where they serve.
