German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that the recognition of Kosovo’s independence from Serbia is part of the dialogue for the normalization of relations between the two countries.
Referring to the expected agreement between them, Scholz said that the document will have many details, but that it will also include the recognition of Kosovo.
Scholz made the comments after meeting in Berlin with Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti.
“The objective of the Brussels dialogue [between Kosovo and Serbia] is a comprehensive, lasting agreement between the two countries, which opened to both countries the prospect of [membership in] the European Union and contributes to regional stability,” Scholz said.
Kurti, on the other hand, said that “mutual recognition should be at the center and not at the end of the process” of negotiations with Serbia.
He said that Kosovo is “proactive and constructive” in dialogue and that it is making proposals that are in line with the values of the European Union.
“We are committed to achieving concrete results quickly and in full co-operation,” Kurti told a joint news conference with the German chancellor.
Scholz said it was important that at a time when Russia was waging war in Ukraine, Pristina and Belgrade work to resolve differences.
He also pledged to work with EU partners on visa liberalization for Kosovo.
“In terms of time periods, we can not say, because it depends on other bodies, but we are interested in this happening quickly,” said Scholz.
The German Chancellor also announced a visit to Kosovo, as part of a tour of the Balkan region.
After meeting with Kurti, he will also meet with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.
Afterwards, Kurti and Vucic are expected to meet together, mediated by the European Union envoy for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Miroslav Lajcak.
Earlier, German Ambassador to Kosovo Jorn Rohde said the meetings, among other things, “will serve to support the EU-led Kosovo-Serbia dialogue”.
