Shqipe Neziri Vela, a Kosovo-born energy policy expert and global governance leader, has been recognized by the prestigious international news agency Reuters as one of the top 10 most outstanding women in the world in the energy sector for 2025, an honor that highlights her impact on sustainable energy governance, transparency and leadership. This achievement positions her among the most influential figures globally in shaping energy policy and practices that matter both regionally and internationally.

Reuters’ annual list “Trailblazing Women 2025” celebrates women who are driving significant change through innovation, leadership and public influence in critical industries. Vela earned her spot based on her professional accomplishments, public impact, social contribution and demonstrated leadership in advancing sustainable energy governance and transparent practices in extractive industries.

Currently serving as Program Manager at the International Secretariat of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) in Norway, Vela leads work to strengthen accountability in the governance of oil, gas and mineral resources across dozens of resource-rich countries. Her work focuses on promoting good governance, accountability and sustainable practices that bridge energy security with environmental and social considerations.

Beyond her EITI role, Vela is the co-founder and Chairperson of “Kosovo Women in Energy and Mining”, a professional network dedicated to empowering women, expanding representation and enabling mentorship and professional growth in sectors traditionally dominated by men. Through this platform she has supported programs that promote gender equality, professional development and strategic networking for women in energy and extractives.

Vela’s career spans over two decades and includes leadership in anti-corruption, energy policy and institutional reform with major international organizations such as the World Bank, UNDP, UNICEF, Millennium Challenge Corporation, OSCE and USAID. She also shares her expertise academically as a lecturer in global energy policy, shaping future leaders in the field.
