Zelensky calls on Germany to take a clearer stance on the war in Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to take a clearer position on Russia’s war in Ukraine.

“We need Chancellor Scholz to ensure that Germany supports Ukraine. He and his government must decide” Zelensky said in an interview with German broadcaster ZDF.

Germany should not try to find a balance in relations with Ukraine and ties with Russia, said the Ukrainian president.

“Germany has started sending weapons later than neighboring countries. This is a fact” said Zelensky.

In the beginning, Germany and France supported Ukraine only politically and rhetorically, he added.

Scholz has dismissed criticism that Germany is acting too slowly in sending heavy weapons to Ukraine.

“We will send all the weapons we have agreed on” Scholz said on Monday, adding that Ukrainian forces should be trained in the use of weapons.

“They are extremely heavy weapons. You have to learn to use them, you have to be trained” Scholz said, adding that Ukrainian soldiers are being trained in Germany.
