Defense ministers from NATO and European Union countries have met in Germany to discuss further military assistance to Ukraine.
The meeting is taking place at the US Air Force base in Ramstein.
On Monday, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, who is chairing the meeting, said Washington wanted to see Russia weakened to the point where it would no longer be capable of an invasion like Ukraine.
Ahead of the meeting, reports suggested that Germany would pledge to supply Ukraine with anti-aircraft systems. The newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung reported that the German defense minister would offer weapons at Tuesday’s meeting.
For months, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been urging Western allies more weapons, saying his forces could turn the tide of war with more firepower.
NATO countries have pledged support, including defensive weapons, but Western powers have been reluctant to deepen their involvement for fear of sparking a wider conflict against Russia, which is armed with nuclear weapons.
