France to move French embassy in Ukraine back to Kyiv

Share

France will “very soon” move back its embassy in Ukraine to the capital Kyiv, Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba in a phone call.

The French embassy was moved to Lviv in early March as conditions worsened on the ground after Russia invaded Ukraine in late February, the ministry statement said.

“We think the return of French nationals who have lived in Ukraine is still unimaginable. The return of the French today continues to be officially banned,” the French government said on April 13, noting that “all of Ukraine continues to be a war zone.”

France is providing Ukraine with military equipment, humanitarian aid and assistance to investigate crimes allegedly committed by Russian forces against Ukrainian civilians.

European politicians have flocked to the Ukrainian capital since Russian forces withdrew from the country’s north in the face of strong Ukrainian resistance earlier this month.
