U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has called for a ban on offensive weapons, as the U.S. has recently faced two deadly attacks.
Harris made the remarks as she attended the funeral of Ruth Whitfield, 86, who was killed by gunfire at a grocery store in Buffalo on May 14.
The Buffalo shooting happened ten days before the attack on an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, where 19 children and two adults were killed.
Harris, referring to these attacks, said it was time to say “enough is enough” about gun violence.
“Everyone should stand up and agree that this should not happen in our country and we should have the courage to do something about it,” she said during the funeral.
The U.S. vice president added that the solution is clear and includes issues such as verifying the past and banning offensive weapons.
“Do you know what an attack weapon is? It is designed for a specific purpose: to kill as many people as possible as quickly as possible. An attack weapon is a weapon of war and has no place in civil society,” she said.
The 18-year-old attacker in Texas carried out the attack with two AR-15 semi-automatic rifles, which he reportedly bought as soon as he turned 18 years old.
After he was shot dead, police found 1,657 bullets and 60 cartridges.
Meanwhile, the attacker in Buffalo, New York, also 18 years old, had illegally bought an AR-15 style weapon.
Vice President Harris asked why one should be able to buy weapons to kill other people without undergoing a verification process.
The issue of gun control has divided the American political spectrum. Nearly all Democrats support tougher gun controls, compared to just 24 percent of Republicans who are in favor of tougher gun control.
