Boris Johnson has congratulated Emmanuel Macron on his re-election, adding: France is one of our closest and most important allies.
Reactions are coming in to the vote projection showing that Mr Macron has been reelected to serve as France’s president for the next five years.
“Bravo Emmanuel,” Charles Michel, president of the European Council tweeted, before going on to say the EU needs a France totally committed to a more sovereign and strategic vision.
Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the EU Commission, congratulated him and said she looked forward to continuing their “excellent cooperation.”
“Together, we will move France and Europe forward,” she tweeted.
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte offered his “warm congratulations” to Mr Macron and said he looked forward to continuing their cooperation within the EU and NATO.
The prime ministers of Belgium and Luxembourg, were among the first European leaders to congratulate French President Emmanuel Macron on his re-election on Sunday. Belgium’s Alexander De Croo and Luxembourg’s Xavier Bettel quickly posted congratulations on Twitter. With Michel, the two are all centrist allies of Macron.
