Airbnb will no longer offer services in China, where the policy for zero cases of coronavirus infection means that isolation measures are ongoing.
All requests for homes in this state will be removed from the company’s website by the summer, said a source to the British broadcaster, the BBC.
Holdings within China have accounted for only 1 percent of the company’s revenue in recent years.
Airbnb is now expected to focus on Chinese residents traveling overseas.
Prior to the pandemic, the number of Chinese traveling overseas has tripled in less than a decade, reaching 155 million trips in 2019, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization.
But since 2020, China has implemented some of the toughest restrictions on coronavirus, making travel in and out of the country extremely difficult.
Airbnb expanded its business in China in 2016.
Since then, about 25 million guests have booked their stays through this online platform.
However, BBC sources have said that the operation of the company in China has been hampered even before the pandemic.
For example, guest details have been sent to the Chinese Government in line with local laws and regulations, and the company has faced stiff competition from Chinese platforms offering the same services.
