U.S. activists welcome cross-party arms control deal

Share

US activists on Sunday welcomed a possible cross-party agreement on arms security reforms, but stressed that the proposals did not go far enough.

“This is progress, albeit small,” said David Hogg, a shooting survivor at the 2018 Parkland School in Florida.

Former lawmaker Gabrielle Giffords, who was wounded in a 2011 shooting in Arizona, said it was a “significant step forward.”

The plans include tougher controls on buyers under the age of 21 and crackdowns on illegal arms purchases.

The Americans for the reforms were announced by a cross-party group of U.S. senators on Sunday.

President Joe Biden said the plans were “steps in the right direction”, but they were not far from what he and many Democrats had sought.
