Anita Likmeta, the girl from Durres, who left Albania in 1997, was undoubtedly the most discussed name the day before, when she invaded the news and portals that she is officially the first Albanian candidate for a seat in the House of Deputies of Italian Parliament, in the early parliamentary elections to be held on September 25.
But who is Anita Likmeta and how did she manage to become part of the neighboring country’s politics? She has been living in Italy since she was 11 years old. Graduated from “La Sapienza” University in Rome, she worked as a journalist for “Huffington Post Italy”. Her name also stands out due to the fact that the Albanian entrepreneur in Italy, a member of the Italian Confindustria, has also been selected as one of the 150 most powerful ladies in Italy, in a ranking for the most famous women from various fields.
In the elections of September 25, Anita aims to secure a seat in the parliament with 945 deputies, in both its chambers, while in the next legislature, they will be reduced to 600. Today, Anita on A2 CNN talked about the details of her campaign and expectations towards September 25.
“This is a victory for an Albanian. In the end, the Albanian community has never had a representative. We have to wait to talk about the results, it’s too early now, but the campaign is going very well. It’s a war. I am talking to the Albanian community in Italy. We are a big community. We are the second largest community in Italy. Albanians deserve to have a voice that speaks for them.
The theme of my campaign is women, young people, there is also support for those who have gone to school in Italy and need to get a passport. They want support.
I have spent 15 years at the doors of Italian institutions for residence permits. Albanians are by my side, as they have gone through the same thing”.
In the end, Likmeta said that this is more of a battle for the Italians, since according to her, they no longer have a future for their children.
“I like battles and we will succeed. This is the battle of the Italians. They are the ones who have no future for their children. This is a battle for the Albanians, because it is necessary that we also have a representation for the Italian institutions. But immigrants know how to survive. Thus, this is the biggest battle for the Italians”, said Likmeta.
