The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, stated that Kosovo is very clear in its objectives, which is NATO membership.
She has requested support from all countries so that Kosovo becomes part of the Partner for Peace program. According to Osman, unlike Serbia, Kosovo is committed to the European and democratic path.
Osmani made these statements at the opening of the proceedings of the 102nd Rose-Roth Seminar of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, with the theme “Euro-Atlantic integration of the Western Balkans: prolonged challenges, new realities and future perspectives”.
Osmani said that stability, democracy and peace around the world are currently being threatened, while sophisticated hybrid attacks continue. She said that the Western Balkans should be at the center of attention in the developments that the world is going through.
“Democratic values and worldwide rules are not only being threatened but are being attacked. The ongoing focus on security issues from the Euro-Atlantic Alliance has a major impact on both Kosovo and NATO, the countries of the Western Balkans cannot be seen as an external problem competing for the Euro-Atlantic committee’s attention. The countries of the Western Balkans know well what are the consequences of the bloody wars in the middle of Europe. I represent a people that has been a victim of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, true sacrifice and endurance have led to the freedom won with blood and sweat,” Osmani said.
Osmani stated that Kosovo is continuously contributing to important issues and is in the same line as democratic countries on issues from Russia to China.
She has said that Serbia refuses to become part of NATO and has come even closer to Russia, showing a lot about this country. While Kosovo wants to become part of the Partnership for Peace.
“Serbia has been in joint projects with NATO until it rejects NATO membership. Its rapprochement with Russia speaks volumes. We are not yet part of the Partnership for Peace. Kosovo is clear in its intention to become a member and to contribute in this direction, for this reason it is very important that every NATO member supports Kosovo’s membership in the Partnership for Peace”, continued Osmani.
President Osmani said that Kosovo cannot be taken as an example for what is happening, while she said that the only comparison is what the Ukrainians are experiencing today with the Albanians of Kosovo two decades ago.
“Russia is more than a destroyer of projects but a real danger to peace and stability…. Putin may draw inappropriate comparisons, let’s not forget that all of us in Kosovo know that the only thing that can be compared to what is happening in Ukraine and what happened in Kosovo in 1999, is the extraordinary and terrible crimes that Putin is performing them today”, she said.
More than 100 participants are expected at the 102nd Rose-Roth Seminar of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, including MPs from NATO member countries and partner countries. It will last three days.
