Osmani and Kurti: Kosovo and the USA agree that the dialogue should focus on recognition

The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, and Prime Minister Albin Kurti, said that during their visit to the United States, Washington’s support for Kosovo was reconfirmed, both in the field of economy and European integration.

Osmani and Kurti stayed for several days in the USA, where they met with the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, and participated in the signing of an agreement worth over 200 million dollars with the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).

After returning to Kosovo, in a press conference at the “Adem Jashari” airport, Osmani said that in the meeting, Blinken confirmed the position that the dialogue with Serbia should be focused on mutual recognition.

“In this topic, it is very important that the American position has been reconfirmed that they do not push forward a solution that would affect the territorial integrity, sovereignty of the Republic of Kosovo or even the constitutional arrangement of Kosovo”, said Osmani.

Since 2011, Kosovo and Serbia have been holding talks with the mediation of the European Union, with the aim of normalizing relations.

However, Kosovo insists that the process must be concluded with mutual recognition, while Serbia seeks a compromise solution.

Prime Minister Kurti said that the meeting with Secretary Blinken was “special” and “useful” for Kosovo. Speaking about the dialogue, he said that Pristina and Washington agree on how the process should be concluded.

“And as the formula of this normalization looks like, again we fully agree with the USA. And it is: a legally binding agreement for the complete normalization of relations, which is based on mutual recognition”, said Kurti.

Osmani announced that in the meeting with Blinken, they talked about the recognition of Kosovo and received the support of the USA in this matter, but also about the increase of cooperation in the field of security and defense.

Both heads of state admitted that during the meeting on July 27 in Washington, Secretary Blinken also raised the issue of the Decan Monastery, but neither Osmani nor Kurti elaborated further on whether there was a request from the US on this topic, while Osmani said that this topic was raised “in the context of the decision of the Constitutional Court of Kosovo”.
