No consensual candidate, the third round for the president of Albania fails

Share

Voting in the third round for the election of the president in the Albanian Parliament has failed as the political parties did not submit any candidacy.

The opposition refused to be part of today’s session with the exception of some deputies, such as Ina Zhupa, Agron Duka, Fatmir Mediu, Petrit Vasili, Edmond Spaho.

With the first three rounds now considered burnt, the president is elected by 84 votes.

In the last two rounds, a simple majority of 71 votes will suffice for his election.

Both the majority and the opposition have so far not submitted any name as a candidate.

For the nomination of an official candidate, 20 signatures of deputies are needed.

During 32 years of political pluralism, Albania has elected a consensual president in only one case.

In 2002, with the Nano-Berisha agreement, Alfred Moisiu was elected President with 97 votes.
