Liz Truss will be Britain’s next prime minister after winning the race to lead the ruling Conservative party on Monday at a time when the country faces a cost-of-living crisis, industrial unrest and recession.
After weeks of an often divisive contest where the foreign secretary faced off against former finance minister Rishi Sunak, Ms Truss came out on top with votes from Conservative Party members.
The result now sets in motion the resignation of Boris Johnson, who was forced to announce his resignation in July, months after a scandal left him with little support for his administration.
Mr Johnson will travel to Scotland to meet Queen Elizabeth on Tuesday to formally tender his resignation. Ms Truss will then also meet the Queen where she will be formally asked to form the new government
Liz Truss will become the fourth Conservative Prime Minister since the 2015 election.
