Lajcak: There can be no more barricades in the north

Share

The special representative of the European Union in the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Miroslav Lajcak, said that in the north of Kosovo, the tensions of July 31, when some local Serbs erected barricades, cannot be repeated in the north of Kosovo, to prevent the Government of Kosovo from implementing its decisions on license plates and travel documents.

Lajcak, together with the US envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, and the US ambassador to Kosovo, Jeffrey Hovenier, met the Serbian representatives in the north of Kosovo on Thursday morning.

“This is the reason why we are here today, so that people are not afraid, not to be afraid for their lives, for a normal life… We are doing everything to make sure that there are no barricades,” said Lajcak after the meeting held in North Mitrovica.

He did not want to talk about possible solutions and proposals, saying that “the mission is continuing” and that peace must be preserved.

Lajcak, likewise, did not answer the journalists’ question whether the international community asks Kosovo to once again postpone the implementation of the decision – for another three months, as was speculated in some media in Kosovo.

“There are so many speculations about this process, I don’t want to get into them,” he said.

The European diplomat did not even comment on the statement of the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, that from September 1, the implementation of the decisions on license plates and travel documents will start, but said that “we are working to ensure that there are no barricades”.

“I am optimistic, I should be optimistic. We want September 1 to be a normal and ordinary day”, said Lajcak.

Escobar said briefly that “the mission continues in Belgrade” and that he hopes to make a statement in Belgrade – later today or tomorrow.

Nor did Lista Serbe – the largest Serbian entity in Kosovo, whose representatives participated in the meeting – speak to the media.
